Khammam(Telangana): In a distressing turn of events, Aleti Venkat Reddy, a farmer from Janpahad village in Khammam rural mandal, attempted suicide on Sunday by consuming pesticide. Prior to his attempt, Reddy recorded a selfie video alleging that his agricultural land was being encroached upon by one Jatoth Veeranna.
In the video, Reddy claimed that despite multiple complaints to the police, they have sided with Veeranna. The farmer fell unconscious shortly after ingesting the pesticide and was rushed to a private hospital in Khammam for treatment, following intervention by locals and family members.
Reddy, who owns three acres of land in the village, alleged that Veeranna, who had previously purchased a different parcel from Reddy’s brother Bhupal Reddy, was encroaching on his property by altering its boundaries. This dispute has been ongoing, with previous cases filed at the local police station.
The family revealed that Bhupal Reddy had also succumbed to suicide in 2021, reportedly due to the same land dispute. Local police have registered a case based on Venkat Reddy's family's complaint, and an investigation is currently underway.
The situation underscores the severe impact of land disputes on farmers in rural Telangana and raises concerns about the adequacy of legal and police intervention in such matters.
